COMMUNIQUE OF SOLIDARITY WITH THE ECUADORIAN PEOPLE

The pressures made by the International Monetary Fund have led to the reduction of wages by up to 20% and the elimination of taxes on the importation of agricultural machinery and raw materials. The increases in the price of fuel impacted the public transport sector who led the demonstrations on October, 3d. On October, 4th, students and workers joined the movement, so the demonstrations in the city of Quito took on an insurgent nature.

The indigenous communities decided to join the movement and reach the city of Quito, joining forces with the workers and students, since the transport union ceased its struggle once the transport rates increases had been agreed by false representatives of that union.

These are the first manifestations after 15 years of calm. This calm in the force of the people originated with the government of Rafael Correa who neutralized the popular demonstration using the inhuman state apparatus of capital and neoliberal measures.

Today, the popular uprising has led the government of Lenin Moreno to flee to Guayaquil, the second economic center of Ecuador. On the other hand the demonstrators showed their capacity to fight, taking for a short period of time the building of the National Assembly of Ecuador. The state has wanted to oppress demonstrations through arbitrary detentions, the use of excessive force in violation of international treaties and the blockade of human rights organizations and the Red Cross.

For this reason we turn to the international proletariat, we believe that the grouping under the banners of solidarity between peoples, without borders, is a weapon of high power that we have in our favor. Our call is to unity, the Latino people – and in this specific case, the Ecuadorian people – can no longer carry alone the consequences of this neoliberal fascist policy that aims to give our economy more and more to the oligarchy despots and the IMF, responsible for the misery that afflicts so much to the workers.

The social struggle that is developing in Ecuador does not obey to any political party. This struggle is born of solidarity between peoples who recognize themselves as brothers, fueling the libertarian fire that knows no barriers which cloud the horizon.

This communiqué is signed by anarchist and libertarian organizations that do not claim to be the voice of the Ecuadorian people, but they do feel the struggle as if it were their own.

ECUADOR : « Who financed the indigenous movement? »

There are people who are dreaming of monsters:
Who financed the indigenous movement?

During the 11 days of the National Strike, an imaginary of a strike financed by correismo (from Correa, the former President of Republic of Ecuador, who is currently hidden in Beligium in order to escpe the trial for corruption …) was built, and then after they said it was Maduro pulling the strings. … it seemed that the media had a clear script, in order to keep Lenin Moreno as President and build the necessary elements to convince the people that an attempted coup d’etat was going on..

But what is the reply to the question “who financed the indigenous movement for eleven days ?”

But what is the reply to the question “who financed the indigenous movement for eleven days ?”

It is she. Yes, she : Doña Carmita, the seamstress of the ascent to La Gasca, she financed the indigenous movement. Without networks, without formal political preparation, she gathered the family to prepare sandwiches, because she knows that her brothers in Cotopaxi are at the occupation headquarters and they should be hungry. They must also be cold, that’s why she brought the warmest blanket she gets/ And also  the son’s strong shoes, those with a sturdy floor so they can walk. And a little cut-off cloth to put bicarbonate water on it so that the tear gas can not hurt them.

Other had financed too : the families of Guayllabamba that gathered the communities to gather the best avocados, because the food is richer if you  put avocado on the locro (andes’s corn stew), but also quintals of pickles for a salad, and of onion for the soup of fideo, and also water agüita. So they are not thirsty.

And the students of Tena who picked up medicines, because there is a lack of paracetamol and band-aid … then they came with a pick-up truck with bandages, cotton, tape.
The neighborhood of Toctiuco, La Comuna, Las Casas also had financed the movement. From there, families went down to cook, so they never lack rice and hot caldito, they came with their cutting board and the sharpest knife to prepare the best mince-meat.

That is the monster that Moreno dreams of, a town that rose to sustain the National General Strike. That monster is the neighbor who took the broom to sweep, that monster is the hairdresser, the mason, the seamstress, the baker’s association that did not stop making bread, hundreds of boxes of breads of all kinds, injertos (graft bread), mestizos (mixed bread), manitas (small hands bread), empanadas …

That monster is awake Mr. Moreno and is in your nightmare. ”

CNT-AIT Spain : Solidarity with prisoners on hunger strike and with Antoine Nieto Galindo

Next Saturday, October 19, 2019, at 18h, the CNT-AIT Catalunya will organize on the Angels’ Plaza in Barcelona, an informative and solidarity action with prisoners on hunger strike and with Antoine Nieto Galindo. Antoine, a social and anarchist rebel, is the oldest political prisoner in Europe (and perhaps the world oldest political prisoner, a sad record …) He has been imprisoned for more than 50 years for not having given in to the injustices of the penitentiary system. Although seriously ill, these same prison injustices prevent him from getting out of prison, thus not respecting the bourgeois laws themselves.

Antoine, a social and anarchist rebel, is the oldest political prisoner in Europe (and perhaps the world oldest political prisoner, a sad record …) He has been imprisoned for more than 50 years for not having given in to the injustices of the penitentiary system. Although seriously ill, these same prison injustices prevent him from getting out of prison, thus not respecting even their proper bourgeoisie laws.

Antoine Nieto Galindo expropriated banks in the 70’s without having committed any blood crime. He is a former member of the Coordination of Prisoners in Struggle (COPEL) [which in the late 1970s led to many mutinies in post-Francoist Spanish prisons]. Aintoine is an irreducible fighter against a system that only punishes poverty. He suffered innumerable ill-treatment, torture and isolation from his jailers. In addition, he is also expected to be extradited to France at the end of his final sentence in Spain – in January 2020 – for two life sentences handed down in 1998 following a trialin France that he had not been allowed to attend. It is still time for us to stop this extradition and to obtain its immediate release, and to cry out to the four winds that the fight will continue until the demolition of these extermination centers named prisons.

The rotating hunger strike is the continuation of those conducted since 2018. It proposes a 14 basic points as a collective struggle plateform which, without losing sight of the final horizon : abolition of all prisons, would allow a minimal existence worthy of the people who had the misfortune of falling into the trap of this dehumanizing system, reproductive of poverty, that is the Penitentiary Institution.

The hunger strike is rotated every ten days, at the end of which other prisoners in another penitentiary geographical area will take over. This strike is intended for duration as long as possible. It is a proposal for combat that is a sign of the solidarity and firmness that spread like a wildfire among the group of rebel prisoners, in front of a system that seeks to cancel their rights and crush them brutally. Faced with this injustice, we join their clamor, like other social groups and libertarians who support the struggle from outside.

Come participate in all the actions and support actions organized!

For the 14 points and the abolition of prisons!

No to the extradition of Antoine Nieto Galindo!

Freedom for the prisoners who are fighting!

CNT-AIT CATALUNYA

ECUADOR : This is not over, it has only just begun.

These long days of mobilization have shown us that mutual support exists, and that the anarchist utopia is still alive, because for a few days the park of “El Arbolito” and its surroundings became that place, that place where the people defended itself, fed, cared for, cured and attended the people. Food, medicine and clothing arrived without stopping, while in the barricades the popular guard resisted the advances of the police and cleared any tear bomb that could affect the brothers who were inside the park.

By another side, many hands were still available to prepare the food that arrived, the food was never lacking, the bread was never lacking, in each corner someone offered you water, juice, fruit or a “tarrina” (tub) of food, while congratulating you and encouraging you to continue in the fight.

Long chains of people could be seen moving stones to build and supply the barricades, while at the shouting of « Medico ! » the brigade was attending to mobilize and assist the wounded comrades in battle.

Thus, each of us brought and contributed, on the battlefield, in the chain, in the shelter, in the kitchen, in the medical brigade, and in each of the places that allowed this mobilization to be possible.

We live the class struggle and we realized that there are parasites that only seek their own interest and that they do not mind killing or using all the force they have at their disposal (police and military) to maintain and defend their privileges. And so we understood that we do not need them, we understood that they are our enemies.

We also learned that never, but never, the police can be trusted, and that like the bourgeoisie they are our enemies and could never be people, they could never be as long as they wear uniforms and stand on the side of the tyrant.

But above all, we learned that popular mobilization does bring results, that organization and effort can change things, and that those at the top fear us, they fear us because they know what we are capable of, and now they will fear us even more because we too we know.

We remains careful and critical, because this is nothing more than a small sample of what we have left to achieve.

P.S. Thanks to all the “compas” (compagnons) who, from their trenches, fought with conviction and without rest, without decay and without sleep. Tonight we will rest and sleep deservedly, but tomorrow this continues, and we know that we will have the same conviction and courage with which we face this battle.

This is not over, this has only just begun.

The “Amalgameted Workers CNT-AIT Union” in the city of Albacete (Spain), informed the whole staff of the Burger King’s restaurants in this city of the dispute they initiated against the management of the company, for their systematic violation of the rights of workers and unions.

The CNT-AIT union is made up of Burger King workers and other workers in solidarit. The CNT-AIT union does not stand for union elections, does not participate in the works council and has no permanent staff. It is organized as an assembly of workers who decide for themselves their demands and their strategy, without political or religious external influence.

The CNT-AIT union has written to the management of 4 franchised restaurants in Albacete (Tejares, Imaginalia, Albacenter and Autovía 31) the list of workers’ demands that the company must respect immediately.

The staff of these Burger King restaurants suffer from poor working conditions :

– non-compliance with employment contracts by the company,
– work contracts that do not comply with legal requirements,
– non-compliance with job descriptions
– non-compliance with collective agreements, particularly on hiring and working hours,
– social security fraud,
– understaffing, especially for cleaning, etc …

The Works Council (in which the CNT-AIT does not participate by ethical principle) also denounced this situation, in parallel with our direct denunciation.

The company thad began to partially respond to our demands, by providing work clothes and returning within the framework of the collective agreement, particularly on the respect of employment contracts. But to go further in the satisfaction of all claims, it is clear that this will depend on the effort, unity and commitment of all the workers.

The obligation to give a set of work’s clothes to any worker is a compulsory part of the employment contract. But the management had not been fulfilled for a long time. The obligation for the boss is to give each employee a cap, a belt, an ID badge, two polo-shirts and two pants. Although the company’s management gave us only one polo-shirt and one pair of trousers, he says he attaches great importance to personal hygiene. We are forced to work with only one work uniform but this is only one of the most visible problems for all workers. The lies of the management go as far as the signing of illegal labor contracts.

The most important problem is certainly that the company force us to sign part-time contracts that are systematically illegal, simply because it serves bests the exclusive interest of the company.

Some of the irregularities include hiring conditions, lack of staff, non-compliance with the legal working hours and, in particular, non-compliance with the 12-hour break between two days of work. The schedules are never rated, so the workers work according to the good will of the management, without being paid for overtime. As a result, there is a general feeling of awkwardness amongst all the employees.

Among the most controversial measures, the Regional Labor Inspectorate declared unconstitutional the obligation imposed by the company on employees to shave their beards. Our union is radically opposed to this corporate action because it is used by management as a means of intimidating workers on a disciplinary basis.

The company policy, which only seeks to increase its profit at all costs to the detriment of hygiene, has only resulted in the closure of a restaurant in August by the Services of Hygiene inspection … This paradoxically has caused the company to lose thousands and thousands of euros.

In the face of all these attacks, the company must know that Burger King workers will not quietly sit idly by.

We know that the company is very concerned about the intervention of the CNT-AIT in this dispute. Management has been researching who are the people behind the CNT-AIT. (As the CNT-AIT does not participate in elections nor to Works Council, nor it has any public representative, management can not identify who are the « leaders » … For the good reason that the CNT-AIT unions operating in assembly so there is no « leader » that the Directorate could buy or intimidate …)

That is why CNT-AIT addressed all Burger King staff to encourage them to promote a permanent assembly of workers. An assembly where everyone can participate and get involved in the fight, until its ultimate conclusion which will be the end once and for all of the precariousness in this enterprise.

Organized workers, boss intimidated !

The strength of the workers is solidarity.

Burger King, the king of precariousness.

In 1978, the CNT’s reformist fraction who created the spanish CGT, led by Enric Marcos (first CGT-e general secretary), were visiting the US embassy in Madrid to explain that « CNT » (later CGT) supported democracy and was a good alternative to « communism » for workers and avoid any developpment like in Italy …

Also they explain clearly why they sould be authorized to participate to professional elections and why it is so important as it would give a clear evidence that – according to their point of view – the « CNT » (which will became CGT) has abandoned the revolutionary path …

WHAT IS A NATIVE PEOPLE ?

 »Friday, August 28, 2009 »

I would like to discuss an interesting communiqué from the French Anarchist Federation (FAF) (June 2009) which values  »… practices based on the Amerindian habits and customs and tradition of direct democracy [which] not are not only developped into the « original » (native) peoples communities, but also expading outside those communities.  » Because « These values are joining some anarchist proposals : autonomy from the state and political parties, collective decisions, federalism. »

Anarchists realize that people in the Amazon rainforest are implementing principles that are dear to them, fine ! Although, contrary to what an unrepentant Westerno-centrism makes them write, it is not the Native Americans who « join us » but we who are getting our bearings : after all, their practices pre-exist a few centuries before the creation of the FAF (and of the CNT-AIT) !

The notion of « habits and customs / traditions » remains to be discussed. Presented as it is, it gives the impression that all this is respectable! But seniority does not make quality, and in the Americas, as in Europe, there is obviously a sort to be done in all the traditions ! Finally, the notion of « original (native) peoples » seems to me to be racialist (if not racist).

Anarchists realize that people in the Amazon rainforest are implementing principles that are dear to them, fine ! Although, contrary to what an unrepentant Westerno-centrism makes them write, it is not the Native Americans who « join us » but we who are getting our bearings : after all, their practices pre-exist a few centuries before the creation of the FAF (and of the CNT-AIT of course) !

First of all, what is the meaning of the word « people » ?

People can be used with the mean of « population » (which is our case when we sometimes use it) or it can be use with the nationalist sense, that of a closed community, historically built on a territory which belongs to it, with its past and its future, a community which determines to such a point the individual that the latter can only act and react specifically to this community and its tradition ? The confusion between the two meanings is pernicious.

Because for an anarchist, to escape the determination induced by the place / tradition where he was born, where he lives, is at the very base of his personal revolution; and this revolution is possible only because, contrary to obscurantist ideologies, the « French », « Gaulish », « Catalan », « Parisian » or « Native American » peoples are sociological constructs (which appear and disappear in time) and have no other reality.

NO ONE IS MORE « NATIVE » THAN ANOTHER!

Finally, the notion of « original » (native) is purely ridiculous. Is it necessary to remember that there is only one human specie (and not races!) And that the human specie has one and the same single common origin. Nobody is more « original » – or native – than another ! No pseudo-race has any right over another, neither because of its supposed place of birth (as « race », « people »), nor of its cultural beliefs (or of its tradition, mission , its » civilization « …), nor of its technological development.

If it is necessary to support the fight of the populations of Amazonia, it is not for their « habits and customs / traditions  » and even less their « origins » On the exact opposite, we support them because, their autonomous struggle against the economical exploitation (of which the destruction of the planet is a part) and against the state’s oppression is universal and an example for all of humanity

WHO WERE THE YOUNG BOSNIA AND GAVRILO PRINCIP ?

« The Sarajevo assassination » is known in history as the assassination perpetrated on Sunday, June 28, 1914, against Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and his wife, Sophie Chotek, Duchess of Hohenberg1, by the group Young Bosnia (Mlada Bosna). Gavrilo Princip was the author of the fatal shots. This event is considered as the trigger of the First World War, which resulted in the defeat, fall and dismemberment of the Russian, Austro-Hungarian, German and Ottoman empires, as well as the outbreak of the Russian and German Revolution.

But who were these Young Bosnia? Were they Serb nationalists, as the Serbian Government is now pretending, in an attempt to rewrite history?

Young Bosnia (MLADA BOSNIA)

We live in a time that is spiced up with a huge amount of innacurate, unverified information. Daily political juggling of historical facts and bizarre attempts to establish non-existent links between those facts and the recent wars in the Balkans.

Official history is written by the winners, and in that sense it is no wonder that Gavrilo Princip and comrades, the whole generation of rebelled Jugoslav youth, were put on the pillar of shame by the regime’s intelectual hounds, and accused of provoking World War I. And today, in commemorating one hundred and fifth anniversary since the assassination of the Crown Prince Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary, we witness the placement of many lies, as well as attemtps to restore and exploit the revolutionary views of the assassins by the regime in Serbia, placing them in the context of Serbian nationalism.

World War I was intra-imperialistic conflict that claimed nearly forty million lives. At that time, Bosnia and Herzegovina was in the forst position of all South Slavic countries under Austro-Hungarian rule, since the criminal regime, popularly known as the ’’dungeon of the people’’, maintained feudal relations together with the breakthrough of capitalism.

The generation whose view of the world was built on the myth of Bogdan Žerajić, the great admirer of the anarchist Peter Kropotkin, and the unsuccessful assassin of General Marijan Varešanin – governor of Bosnia and Herzegovina, whom Žerajić shot at in June 1910, stood and grew up there. ’’With the last bullet he shot himself, while the general remained unharmed. Police ripped the head of the Žerajić’s corpse, and displayed it at the police collection as a sample of the anarchist’s head, while the body was burried secretly. The youth have found his grave, visited it, planted flowers there, and swore at it to work to achieve the ideals of freedom’’, the literature informs us.

One should be aware that during this period, nationalism, as the new phenomenon, was insufficiently crystalized, and so national, religious, and political ideas, which were often opposed – coexisted. Only at the moments where different inclinations would come into direct conflict with one another, would the problem of choosing between them arise in the minds of people. This was also true for the Yugoslav revolutionary and national youth movement by the year 1914.

Undoubtedly, the Youth was primarly for the unification of the South Slavs, while the ideas of social justice, federalism, anti-clericalism, anti-parliamentarism and anarchism also played a prominent role in shaping the consciousness of these young generations in Slovenia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which were at that point under the Austr-Hungarian monarchy.

’’The spirit that these boys were ,intoxicated’ with, was a fanatical hatred of authority and tiranny – at school, in the family, on the street, and against every government. For the youth, this was the meaning of politics.’’, says Josip Horvat, historian and contemporary of the events, describing the atmosphere that prevailed among the rebelled youth in Zagreb at the time.

Marked as one of the leading inspirers and organizers of the assassination, and as such condemned to death and killed in February 1915, Young-Bosnian Danilo Ilić, worked extensively on translating and publishing revolutionary, socialist, and anarchist literature before the assassination. So, as the first book in his Oslobođenje Library in Sarajevo, in the year 1913. he published the ,Paris Commune and the Idea of the State’ by Mikhail Bakunin, and immediately afterwards, as the second title in the same year’s edition, ,The lie of Parliamentarism’ by prominent Austrian anarchist Pierre Rami.

It is only a matter of chance that Nedeljko Čabrinović, who was along with Gavrilo Princip the main organizer of the assassination, did not go down in history as tyrant – a bomb he threw at Ferdinand’s car, just moments before the shots from Princip’s revolver, bounced off and exploded with a delay. Nedeljko was the typesetter of the anarcho-syndicalist newspaper ,Komuna’, which was printed in Belgrade at the time. At the trial, he unambigously declared himself as an anarchist, talking about his ties to anarchists and anarcho-syndicalists in the region, and explaining the development of his views from nationalism, through socialism to anarchism.

It is often speculated about the role in the assassination of a belated « Manzinian » figure (1), the Serbian colonel Dragomir Dimitrijević – Apis, and his organization Unification or Death, better known as the Black Hand. Apart from some circumstantial evidence of the contacts of some people from his encirclement with the Young-Bosnians, there is no evidence to support thesis of him being the main inspirer and organizer of the assassination.

A wealth of material evidence and testemonies of contemporaries show that the assasination was the work of young idealists who, in the lack of possibility of collective resistance to repression, in the tradition of anarchist propaganda by deeds, resorted to tyrant assassination as the expression of the aspirations for freedom of the South Slavs. Even the judical system of the Austrian ruling class found it impossible to prove the direct involvement of the Serbian state apparatus in organizing the assassination. Indeed, there are clues that indicate that the Serbian ruling party was not aware of the details of the assassination, but that, expecting a similar move, it alerted Austro-Hungary of such possibility. Therefore, it is extremely inappropriate to attempt to establish the thesis on the acts of Young-Bosnians as the executors of the Serbian state Policy.

History today is interpreted by opponents of the values such as unity and freedom. That is precisely why it is our duty to combat their criminal interpretation by taking a firm anti-militaristic and anti-imperialist stance, in order to contribute to preserving the memory of a generation that was never allowed to free themselves completely.

Ko hoće da živi nek` mre,

Ko hoće da mre nek` živi !

’’Who wants to live – let him die,
Who wants to die – let him live!’’

Poetry of Bogdan Zerajic, sang by Gavrilo Princip

When swedish SAC choosed the « free world camp » and US capitalism during Cold war ..

« The fight against war »

Evert Arvidsson’s article in Dagstidningen Arbetaren (SAC’s magazine), published in 1956

The activity of the SAC in the cause of peace is as old as the organization itself. Probably, there is no movement in our country that has proportionately done such a great job for peace and international fraternization as the SAC. This interest continues to exist to the same degree. The current basis for the struggle of the SAC in favor of peace is given by the declaration of principles voted in 1952. In it it is noted that the movement fights for a federalist order of international law which suppresses nationalism and makes the superfluous militarism. It is further stated that the SAC considers the struggle against militarism and war as one of the most important cultural tasks, and it is also underlined that the trade unionists members of the SAC are supporters of common actions of free popular movements against the war.

In the resolution on tactics adopted by the 1953 Congress, which defines and interprets the content of the Declaration of Principles in this point, that the SAC appeals to popular solidarity wherever it is possible to mobilize it to ensure peace among the peoples through negotiations. In the event that this is not successful, the SAC recommends direct action against, war. This means that the SAC, in case the people in the country which represents the threat of war can do the same, will try to prevent the war by sabotage of mobilization, general strike against the own government, etc.

This is the known attitude of the SAC which has always been the same. We are ready to apply it under the conditions which make it possible. In case the situation is quite different, the tactics of the SAC also change. Indeed, the situation has changed radically since the emergence of modern totalitarianism, the new despotism of our time. We quote the tactic resolution:

« The difference between the social situation of democracy and dictatorship is so great that it acquires a decisive importance for libertarian trade unionism. State despotism liquidates all free popular movements and thereby destroys the basis of the struggle of libertarian trade unionism for peace (that is, the pacifist struggle in its traditional forms). To the extent that any activity for peace is carried out under dictatorship, this activity will be the work of the state itself. But the defense of democracy as an institution is the basic condition not only for the pacifist struggle of libertarian trade unionism, but also for all activity of our movement. This is why libertarian trade unionism unhesitatingly takes the side of democracy when it comes to the fight against dictatorship in all its forms. «

SAC resolution on tactics, 1953

This is the attitude of the SAC which is very much in line with its position on all other issues. SAC unionism has never been pacifist in a superficial sense; but a movement of struggle. Its struggle is directed against all forms of injustice, violence and oppression. We have demonstrated this in practice. Trade unionists and anarchists have always been in the forefront of the defense against all oppressive power, be it old-style capitalist violence, Bolshevism or fascism. It is enough to remember the initiatives of the trade unionists, and of the Spanish anarchists, of their important interventions in the struggle against the aggression of Spanish fascism and German and Italian fascisms. Blood has been shed many lives have been sacrificed.

But we must look closer at the idea of defense accepted by libertarian unionism. We will never fight for « the homeland », for a specific territory. For us, these are social systems without considering national borders. Libertarian trade unionism defends freedoms where they exist and it stands against oppression wherever it comes from. “This also applies to the case, to quote once again the resolution on tactics « where state despotism invades the country to crush any form of freedom in the sense of libertarian trade unionism ».

This is something essential for us. Libertarian unionism does not want to fight oppressive forces that may appear within the country, but to remain passive when it comes to oppression that comes from outside. This is the origin of the resolution on tactics of the SAC. Since the SAC never wanted to play the role of a « Qvisling » (1) it was obliged to clarify these ideas in order to find a position which was acceptable in the face of the new situation. Already in 1938, confronted with the threat of Hitlerism, the SAC saw that a new situation demanded a new tactic and in 1953, the resolution of tactics that we have just explained was voted by the national congress of the movement with 64 against 8.

Reply from Christian Lagant of GAAR (Anarchist groups of revolutionnary action ) published in issue number 2 of “Noir et Rouge magazine”(black and red magazine)

The proletarians have no homeland

Black & Red n ° 2, summer 1956

In our last (and first) issue, we published two texts from the Swedish libertarian trade union movement, the S.A.C. (Sveriges Arbetares Central Organization) concerning: 1) the problem of nationalizing a company, 2) the position of our comrades in the face of war.

(…), the case of attitude of S.A.C. facing with an international war conflict also seems to us to justify the publication of a more in-depth study on a subject whose topicality can become hot from one moment to another, and this, in spite of the friendly toasts of a Khrushchev or the good smile of an Eisenhower.

It goes without saying that the point of view of the comrades in Sweden provoked reactions and discussions in libertarian circles. In two words, let’s recall this one:

  • SAC has always fought for the cause of peace. In the event of war or the threat of war between two democratic countries, S.A.C. will fight to demand negotiations. If these fail, the S.A.C. recommends direct action by the masses of the warring countries against their own governments.
  • In the event of a conflict between a democracy and a dictatorship (fascism, Bolshevism, etc.) S.A.C. sides alongside democracy, without however opting for any notion of « Fatherland ». SAC just choose democracy as a lesser evil.

We do not believe that we have distorted the thinking of the comrades by so succinctly recalling their position. By stating ours here we do not think we will either definitively decide the question because if it is relatively easy to express general principles, how many of us can say with certainty what they will do at the time of the supreme choice? Regardless, the merit of the comrades of S.A.C. will be for having opened a dialogue by clearly specifying a position with which libertarians in many countries disagreed.

This is the case of G.A.A.R., for example, and we were already expressing our opposition to the text of S.A.C. writing recently:

« The text tends to prepare ‘The Sacred Union » (national union] even before the outbreak of a conflict. Recently an agency report announced that according to an opinion poll in Sweden, around 80% of the population was ready to defend the country in the event of an attack. It is therefore, to say the least, astonishing for us to see libertarian trade unionism not to rank among the 20% who, consequently, “will not line up”.

Indeed, how can we not feel astonished, to put it mildly, at the choice of libertarians in favor of « democracy »-  in fact of capitalism. Yes, of course, we understand that S.A.C. disregards any idea of « fatherland », any idea of defense of a specific territory, and takes without « hesitating the party of democracy against dictatorship ». But the result is there and all the details and reassuring justifications for our internationalist concept will not change anything. And first, what do our comrades understand by « democracy »? The right to meet in a back room of coffee to discuss politics whereas the reciprocal is prohibited in the countries known as of behind the Iron Curtain? That the right to assembly, to speak, to publish is greater in our « democracies », okay, we would be stupid to den stupid to deny it (although these elementary rights in democrats are dwindling day by day, see the situation in France for example) but this is precisely where the mistake begins. Yes, for a certain number of libertarian comrades, seeing this difference between capitalist and bureaucratic regimes is tantamount to « choosing » the lesser evil. A whole part of our perspective is distorted by an erroneous dilemma, by an arch-lame formulation: « Shall I choose plague or cholera? » Then it might make more sense to try not to be sick.
A few years ago a number of us helped launch a campaign for the « 3rd Front ». What do we mean by that? Simply that it was time to try to demystify the workers and that the notion of an inevitable suicide choice between the Russian and American blocs, there was a 3rd common fighting front, that of the exploited. No doubt our formula was not perfect because it was repeatedly interpreted in various ways. However, the G.A. A.R. have not given up on their spirit if they changed its form slightly. They indeed note the division of the world into two antagonistic blocs, the impossibility for revolutionaries to subjugate themselves to one or the other of these blocs, nor to support them. The only field of struggle is that of the classes, which is waged on the international and proletarian front, (extract from a resolution on war adopted at the first Congress of G.A.A.R.).

Of course, we will be told that these are just a few words and the reality is simpler. Indeed, it is very simple to take the gun in the event of war to defend democracy against dictatorship. On the other hand, it is much more complicated to try not to behave like servants of the STATES where we live, than whatever they are (since there is not yet a country in a libertarian regime, as far as we know) and this second attitude is obviously in direct relation. with the « big words » quoted above.

We are wary of « Sacred Unions » and the defense of a lesser evil regime sank many revolutionaries into militarism with strange underlying elements, including Kropotkin and Jean Grave at the start of the « Great War » (sic) and in 1939 the Hitlerite danger could also be a justification for taking up arms and the khaki livery to defend « democracy ». We will be allowed to say that considering the problem from this angle is very primary for libertarians because before the effects, we must see the causes and we do not believe that the comrades who left in Spain in 1936 to fight in the Durutti column were less anti-fascist than the government troops fighting for a « democratic » republic. If the comrades of S.A.C see anti-fascism in Spain from this perspective, we obviously agree. As for Hitlerism and to take the situation in France, some fought in the maquis without joining Leclerc or the F.F.L., trying to give their combat as much class character as possible. It is true that on this last point the statists that are the Trotskyists often taught the anarchists a lesson, but this is another story which we hope to return to in more detail.

In summary, it emerges from these various observations that we disagree with the position of the comrades of S.A.C. We would like the dialogue to continue and expand, the stakes are serious enough.

PARIS : inauguration of the garden federica MONTSENY and Republican exorcism

Today, on August 24, 2019, the mayor of Paris, a member of the Socialist Party (the one of the non-intervention in Spain in 1936 and much more bullshit since …), The Minister of Justice of the Kingdom of Spain (put in place by the military rebellion led by Caudillo Franco) ), the Ambassador of the same Kingdom, the Montseny family (we cannot blame them), not forgetting the ineffable Aimable Marseillan (who arrived late) inaugurated the Parc « Federica Montseny » in Paris .

On the plaque that was unveiled we read « Federica Montseny: libertarian writer ». Surely the word « Anarchist » would have torn their eyes …

Federica didn’t like honors very much, especially Republicans … The best tribute paid to her that day was without a doubt the dozen of police vans and the police detachment that protected the bank window next to the ceremony . By chance that Federica’s ghost would come to join the ceremony. Surely that, even if they are dead and buried under honors, the Power is still afraid of anarchists. He feels obligated to organize exorcism rituals to integrate these demons into the republican and democratic pantheon.

Fortunately, there were some voices to shout out loud to this whole little world:

Neither monarchy nor republic, long live anarchy!

Federica presente !
