The CNT-AIT in France —the French section of the International Workers’ Association—is 80 years old !

Although the Confederation was formally established in December 1946 at a congress in Paris, the first CNT-AIT union to be officially registered was the one in Toulouse, which was legalized as early as July 22, 1946.

However, the history of anarcho-syndicalism in France—and in Toulouse specifically—goes back much further. Evidence of this can be found in the CNT-AIT’s Toulouse premises in the form of a bookcase belonging to the Masons’ Union, dating back to Toulouse’s first *Bourse du Travail* (Labor Exchange) in 1892.

Formed from the regrouping of pre-war CGTSR-AIT veterans, migrant refugees who had fled the fascist dictatorships of Franco in Spain or the Communist dictatorship in Bulgaria, as well as young people who had participated in the Resistance battles but who were not satisfied with the return to normal, the CNT-AIT carried the hopes of a social and libertarian revolution.

Despite the ups and downs of its turbulent history, the CNT-AIT—driven by the determination and actions of its members and supporters—continues on its path, contributing to the movement for universal human emancipation and spreading anarcho-syndicalism through both ideas and action.
